Mae's is owned and operated by Sean and Jessica McCarthy. They took over Anna's Coffee Shoppe, a fixture in Pleasant Ridge from 1959 until 2009. They opened the doors to their little restaurant in April of 2010 and have been busy ever since.
In the tiny, seven foot wide kitchen, Jessica and her fellow cooks create food that is inspired by her family recipes and food she and Sean have enjoyed in their travels together. The majority of the menu items are made in house, from scratch like the biscuits and gravy, the jams, all of the baked goods, the pancake batter that is whipped up every morning and even the turkey that is roasted right there in the oven for your sandwich. What they don't create themselves is supplied by local vendors like Zingerman's Bakehouse, McClure's Pickles, Great Lakes Coffee and Guernsey Dairy.
Signature menu items include Aebelskivers, a Scandinavian specialty that Jessica grew up with; Butter Burgers, a U.P classic; and Sean's favorite, the Portland Special, a sandwich piled with Cap'n Crunch breaded chicken tenders, hot sauce and pepper jack cheese on grilled farm bread. Mae's also serves the Detroit classics like Faygo, Vernor's and Better Made chips.
Mae's is a small, comfortable, neighborhood place where friends gather and enjoy simple, home style meals together. We hope you'll join us soon.
